Fixing Roof

Roof Replacement

Of all the home projects you may undertake, roof replacement might be the most important. Without a solid roof, any project, from drywall installation to a kitchen remodel, can be ruined by water infiltrating your home.

But how do you know if your roof needs to be replaced? In many cases, you may be able to repair areas of your roof to make it last a few years longer. For instance, you can replace missing or broken shingles, fix flashing, and replace valleys.

At some point, however, you’ll need an entire roof replacement. This is a good opportunity to evaluate your home’s roofing needs and to possibly make some changes to your roof. When you choose a new roof for your New York home, keep the following options in mind.

Types of Materials

Not all roofing materials are appropriate for every house. Depending on your roof pitch (angle), your home’s structure, and your locality, some options may be better than others. The following are common roofing materials.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is more common on commercial buildings than on residential buildings. It’s very durable, and it may require specialists to install it, depending on the size and requirements of the roof.

Asphalt Composition Shingles

Inexpensive and available in many different colors, asphalt composition shingles are very common. They’re durable and easy to install. They lay very flat on a roof, so some people prefer to find shingles with more “architecture” to them.

Slate Roofing

Slate is a high-end roofing material that is very attractive. It’s quite durable, but it can be extremely slippery to walk on.

Wood Shakes

Wood shakes often last longer than asphalt composition shingles. They’re also very attractive and have a classic appearance. Wood shake shingles are more expensive than asphalt shingles, but they usually last longer.

Faux Slate

Some people want the look of slate but don’t quite have the budget required for slate. Rubber slate can be an attractive option. It’s manufactured from post-industrial synthetics, and it’s becoming more and more popular.
